Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 26: Polymers – Class Test 4 is part of the Punjab Board 2027 Model Papers, prepared according to the new syllabus issued by PECTAA Punjab. Students can use this Chapter 26 Polymers test to prepare for their Chemistry examinations, revise important concepts, and assess their understanding of the topic. This resource is useful for Class 10 Chemistry students preparing through the chapter-wise test series and the full unit model paper for Punjab Boards 2027.
NOTE: Four possible answers A, B, C and D to each question are given. The choice which you think is correct, fill that circle in front of that question with Marker or Pen ink. Cutting or filling two or more circles will result in zero mark in that question.
Time: 10 Min
Objective
Marks: 8
Q.1:(08)
1.Which of the following polymers can be recycled?
Q.2 Write short answers to following questions.(6×2=12)
i.
Are natural polymers hazardous for the environment? Explain why?
No. Natural polymers such as starch, cellulose and proteins are biodegradable: bacteria and fungi break them down into harmless substances, so they do not accumulate in the environment.
ii.
What is plastic?
Plastics are synthetic (man-made) polymers that can be moulded into different shapes by heat and pressure and keep that shape when cooled. Examples: polyethene, PVC, polystyrene.
iii.
Draw the structures of the following polymers.
The list of polymers is not printed in the photo of the paper, so the common ones of this chapter are drawn (polyethene and PVC):
PolyethenePolyvinyl chloride (PVC)
iv.
What are synthetic fibers and give examples?
Synthetic fibres are long thread-like man-made polymers produced from petrochemicals and used to make fabrics. Examples: nylon, polyester (PET), acrylic.
v.
Why is it dangerous to burn discarded articles made of plastics?
Burning plastics releases poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride (from PVC) and dioxins. These pollute the air, cause breathing problems and cancer, and add to global warming.
vi.
What properties of synthetic fibers enable their use in textile industry?
They are strong, elastic, lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, easily dyed, cheap, and not attacked by moths or mildew.
(PART – II)
Note: Attempt the following question.
Q.3: Describe the effects of synthetic polymers on the environment.(5)
1. Most synthetic polymers are non-biodegradable, so plastic waste stays in soil and water for hundreds of years.
2. Discarded plastics fill landfill sites and block drains and sewers, causing flooding.
3. Plastic waste in rivers and oceans is swallowed by animals and fish, harming or killing them.
4. Burning plastics releases toxic gases (CO, HCl, dioxins) that pollute the air and harm human health.
5. Plastic waste can be reduced by reducing use, reusing, recycling (e.g. PET) and developing biodegradable polymers.
